10th Annual Treatment Providers Conference
The Utah Domestic Violence Council is hosting the 10th annual Treatment Providers Conference geared to “Enhancing Accountability through Improved Assessment and Evaluation.” The conference, which provides treatment providers and other interested individuals with the opportunity to hear from experts in the field of domestic violence (DV) offender treatment, will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Aug. 23–25, 2004, at the University Park Marriott, 480 Wakara Way.
This year’s conference highlights co-presenters and keynote speakers Robert Geffner, Ph.D. and L. Kevin Hamberger, Ph.D. experts in DV offender assessment and evaluation. Dr. Geffner is the founder and president of the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute in San Diego, CA, and is a clinical research professor of psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University and has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas at Tyler for 16 years.
Dr. Geffner is a licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist in California and Texas. He is also the editor-in-chief of Haworth’s Maltreatment Journals. He has served on several national and state committees dealing with aspects of family psychology, family violence, child abuse and family law. Dr. Geffner has two books in press and numerous book chapters, journal articles and research papers concerning family violence, sexual assault, child abuse, family and child psychology, custody issues, forensic psychology, neuropsychology, and diagnostic assessment.
Dr. L. Kevin Hamberger is a professor of family and community medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and associate program director of the Racine Family Practice Residency training program. Since 1983 he has been involved with research and practice with domestic violence offenders and victims. He is cochair of the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Domestic Abuse and past chair of the Wisconsin Batterer Treatment Provider Association. He has published 80 articles and books on partner violence. Dr. Hamberger has served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Justice, and Department of Defense.
In addition to the keynote address on Monday and Tuesday, the conference features two elective breakout sessions on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Participants can choose from 10 different workshops ranging from “Addressing Teen Violence” to “More than Willpower: Helping Clients Overcome Destructive Habits.” The conference provides 16 hours of continuing education units for licensed DV treatment providers, fulfilling the annual training requirement. Certificates will be available at the conference upon completion of the final workshop and proof of daily attendance.
The public is welcome to attend the conference to learn more about the issues surrounding the treatment and prevention of intimate partner violence. At-the-door registration for the three-day conference is $150, pending space availability.
